Usage Policy for the PandA GSA Computer Lab
- The PandA GSA computer lab is available to any graduate student who pays a one time $10 key fee to obtain a key to the room. If you don't have a key, don't use the computer room. The room is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- We have tried, as much as possible, to make the computer room available to all graduate students who have a key. Thus, don't ruin things for the rest of us by doing something that would make the department take the lab away from the graduate students.
- A good bit of money, mainly derived from fees paid by graduate students or the department, has been invested in the computer lab. We try to keep the lab as clean and neat as possible, out of respect for our fellow graduate students. As such, try to do the same. There are trash and recycling bins for waste that is generated. Food and beverages are prohibited in the lab, as spills into the equipment can be costly to repair/resolve. Closed beverage containers are generally considered all right. The main culprit, open paper "poker" coffee cups from the vending machine, are strictly forbidden.
- The current lab supervisors, Buck Creel and Michael O'Brien, spend several dedicated hours a week, and miscellaneous time, here and there, ensuring that the lab operates and meets the needs of the students who work there. Everything should work well; there should be software installed on the computers to meet your needs, extra paper for the printers, hardware suitable to do what you want, and systems configured to allow easy use of the lab. If you have a need that is not met, do not attempt to change the system to meet your needs. Please email Buck or Mike, describe your problem/needs and they will get back to you in a reasonable amount of time. This process can save much time and hassle.
- If you have any suggestions about software that you would like to use in the lab, such as language support, software compilers, mathematical programs (except Mathematica, which is prohibitively expensive), etc., please email Buck or Michael with your concerns. We will try to meet your needs, but will tell you if we cannot.
