Summer School students will be housed in the student housing of the
Los Alamos branch of the University of New Mexico. The apartments
are being provided at no charge to the student, and there will be two
students in each apartment.
Each apartment consists of a single large room, with a bathroom, small
kitchen and large walk-in closet. Each one is furnished with 1 sofa,
2 chairs, 1 desk, 1 table, 2 bureaus, 2 twin beds and lamps. Laundry
facilities are available in the apartment building. The building is
located about two blocks from the main shopping center in Los Alamos.
Each apartment will have a basic cable package and high speed internet,
as well as jacks for telephone and modem hookups. The apartments are
not air conditioned, but fans are included in the apartment packages
described below. The summers in Los Alamos are usually moderate, with
high temperatures in the 80's and cooling off to the 60's or high
50's at night.

If you are shipping items before arriving in Los Alamos,
use the UNM-LA address for letters and very small boxes.
Contact James Colgan (jcolgan@lanl.gov) for an address
to use for large boxes (such as bicycles). Do NOT mail
any items to the Albuquerque address you may have used to
mail items to Dr. Seidel.
Personal TV's
Personal Computers
Personal Bikes (School will have a pool of bikes (4 to 8) that can
be used by any of the students, see the Local
Transportation section below for more details.)
Items Shared in Common by All Students
All of the Summer Students are housed in the same building, with each
apartment opening on a common hallway. Because of this, the Summer
School will provide the following items, which will be shared and/or
moved around as decided by all the students.
1 Color television with VCR player
1 Color television with DVD player
3 Vacuum cleaners (2 upright, 1 canister)
3 Laundry baskets
1 tool box (contains basic hand tools, especially for working on
bicycles)
Local Transportation
The public transport system in Los Alamos is going through a series
of changes right now, so we are not sure what to expect for the summer.
At present, the town bus system and the Laboratory bus system have
combined together to offer free transportation around most of the town
and most of the Laboratory sites. This service operates from 6 am to
7 pm on weekdays, with a bus running every 20 minutes. There is no
service on the weekends. Students will be able to board the bus one
block from the apartments and get off about 2 blocks from the UNM-LA
campus, where the morning lectures are held. You can reboard the bus
after classes and continue on to the Laboratory for your projects.
Schedules and maps will be provided in the information packets at the
apartments, along with updates on changes and/or costs.
Los Alamos is a very small town, with the apartments, the UNM-LA
campus and the Laboratory all located within a couple miles of each
other. This makes walking or biking to classes or work a very reasonable
option. Normally, only about 30 to 40 % of the students bring their
own cars, so we have always encouraged students to bring bikes or
tried to find basic bikes for those that wanted them. The last 3 classes
decided to go with a common pool of bikes, which seemed to work reasonably
well, so we are doing this again this year. We hope to have 6 or more
bikes available, all with combination locks that any student can open.
We emphasize that these will be "basic" bikes, with no frills, and really
only suitable for street biking. If you plan on doing serious biking
while you are here, we strongly recommend that you bring your own or
purchase one here. IMPORTANT NOTE: Students are expected to store all
bikes in the bike racks outside the apartment buildings.
There is also limited public bus service between Los Alamos and
Santa Fe (35 miles from Los Alamos). We will provide details about
that after your arrival, but again, the service is only available on
weekdays.
Final Comments
The Summer School is run mostly by volunteers who are providing many
of the above items. The basic kitchen packages may be expanded if enough
of other items becomes available to furnish all of the apartments. If you
need something beyond the items listed above, please do not hesitate to
ask once you arrive in Los Alamos and we will try to obtain it for you.
