Physics 160 Assignments Page

The homework assignments are done via the website WebAssign.net. Every time you log on, you will be asked for three things:

Username  This is your first initial and last name combined as one word (for example, mine would be MHASSELBECK)

Institution  UNM

Password  For your first login, use your UNM network username that identifies you on the university email system (username@unm.edu). Be sure to use all lower case letters. If that doesn't work or you don't have a university email account, try typing "password" without the quotation marks, again all in lower case letters. If you still can't get in, contact me and I'll set you up. Once logged in for the first time, please change your password and store it in a safe place. Remember that your password is case sensitive. If you lose or forget your password, you'll have to contact me to get back on the system.

Log on to WebAssign by clicking here. The three entry fields are on the left hand side of the page.

The problems are directly out of the textbook, but some of the numbers are often changed on the WebAssign site. Follow the directions carefully. You need to complete the entire problem set before submitting it to the website for grading. If you get incorrect answers, they will be noted on the response page that comes up immediately afterwards. After the first submission, you'll have two more opportunities to fix the incorrect answers. If you are happy with your results on the first or second try (even if not a perfect score) the system will grade the last acceptable submission made before the deadline. You are not required to make three submissions.

Note that very large or small numbers (or any number for that matter) can be entered using scientific notation with the format 3.00e+8, for example. Entering 3E8 will also work in this case. The Perl script at WebAssign does not recognize the character sequence 10^ for exponentials. You can also enter fractional values such as 1/10 instead of 0.10. Unrecognized entrys (examples are accidental spaces between numerals or using O instead of 0 to designate zero) are counted as errors for the purpose of grading, so watch for typos when entering data. In general, the script is looking for answers correct to 3 significant figures and a numerical accuracy of 2%. If you are doing a calculation involving pi, for example, you'd need to use at least 3.14 (although having more digits is probably a good idea). If you have questions about entering numerical answers, click here.
